Aaron Fisk, Ph.D.

Research

Aaron Fisk is a professor at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. As climate change continues to cause sea ice melt in the Arctic, commercial fisheries are rapidly expanding northward into areas once fished only by local communities. Recognizing that effective fisheries management in this remote environment requires Indigenous people’s active participation, Fisk used his Pew marine fellowship to support Inuit communities’ engagement in managing a developing artisanal fishery. The Arctic’s rich marine biodiversity includes not only seals and whales but also commercially important fish such as Greenland halibut. Working with the Inuit community of Pangnirtung on southern Baffin Island, Fisk surveyed fishermen on how to develop a sustainable Inuit-based commercial fishery for this species.
