Research

Carl Walters is a professor at the University of British Columbia in the Fisheries Centre. Walters specializes in fisheries stock assessment, adaptive management, and ecosystem modeling. He focuses on developing rapid techniques for teaching systems analysis and mathematical modeling to biologists and resource managers. Walters used his Pew fellowship to test multispecies ecosystem models for experimental management approaches to support ecosystem-scale harvest policies. This was intended to enable fisheries policy analysts to search for strategies to improve economic and biodiversity values from ecosystems. The interface has already been used in a workshop, sponsored by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, to examine multispecies and multi-stakeholder values in management of a variety of marine ecosystems worldwide.
