Research
Callum Roberts is a professor of marine conservation at the University of Exeter. His research focuses on threats to marine ecosystems and species, and on finding the means to protect them. Roberts used his fellowship to address the role of marine reserves in supporting increased fishery yield. Studying existing reserves in St. Lucia, he explored whether reserves can simplify fisheries management, their potential to protect migratory species, and their role in managing offshore and deep-sea regions, as well as the effect of redirecting fishing effort. Roberts has published a number of papers on problems at the forefront of marine reserve science. Currently, his main research interests include documenting the impacts of fishing on marine life, both historic and modern, and exploring the effectiveness of marine protected areas and fisheries management.
