Research

Giovanni Bearzi is president and science director of Dolphin Biology and Conservation in Italy. Bearzi used his Pew fellowship to examine factors that caused the decline of short-beaked common dolphins in the Mediterranean. He also assessed the impact of overfishing and habitat degradation on dolphins living in several coastal areas of the Mediterranean, producing scientific publications and other tools to increase protection of threatened cetacean populations throughout the region. Bearzi and his colleagues continue to investigate the status of dolphin populations in the Mediterranean.
