Research

The long-term goal of my laboratory is to understand molecular mechanisms by which endocrine FGFs and Klotho family proteins regulate metabolism and aging. My laboratory focuses on elucidating functions of Klotho and its related protein beta-Klotho. The klotho gene functions as an aging-suppressor gene that extends life span when overexpressed and accelerates the development of aging-like phenotypes in mice. Klotho regulates multiple metabolic processes, notably phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. Beta-Klotho is involved in the regulation of bile acid, fatty acid, and glucose metabolism. Klotho and beta-Klotho do these jobs primarily through regulating the activity of FGF19-subfamily of hormones. Our current research areas include: 1) Klotho and phosphate metabolism 2) Beta-Klotho and energy metabolism
