Ellen K. Pikitch, Ph.D.

Research

Ellen Pikitch is executive director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science and a professor at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University in New York. Pikitch used her Pew fellowship to develop a “seascape” fisheries approach that promoted cost-effective, sustainable, multispecies management. She focused on a case study in Belize to test methods that synthesized and integrated both conservation and resource-use targets, and considered the ecological parameters for multiple species and their environments. As a result, Pikitch published papers that support the seascape approach to scientists, resource managers, and the general public. Recognized as an international expert in ocean conservation science, Pikitch has authored and edited more than 100 articles and books on fisheries science and management.
