Understanding Marine Protected Areas

Mounting scientific evidence shows that exempting areas of the ocean from fishing, extraction, and other activities is important for ocean conservation. The idea of creating these marine protected areas (MPAs) stems from a growing recognition of the oceans' essential role in supporting life on Earth and of the challenges they face as a result of human actions, from overfishing to climate change.

Pew is working with scientists around the world to learn more about how MPAs can protect habitats for countless marine animals, enable overexploited species to replenish themselves, improve the sustainability of local fisheries, and support ecotourism.
