Protecting the World’s Largest Tuna Fishing Grounds
The world's largest tuna fishing grounds are found in the western and central Pacific Ocean, which is also home to a wealth of other marine life. Unfortunately, this vast region continues to be fished unsustainably—despite strong scientific and management advice to the contrary—while fishing capacity continues to grow.
The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, which meets Dec. 1-5, is responsible for managing all highly migratory fish stocks, including tuna and sharks, in the region. This collection highlight's The Pew Charitable Trusts’ priorities for creating sustainable fisheries, protecting shark populations, and combating illegal fishing.
