Research
Hiroyuki Matsuda is a professor at Yokohama National University in Japan. His research encompasses studies of adaptive management and co-management of marine protected areas, risk analysis, and game theory. The focus of his Pew fellowship was to develop a Marine Management Plan for Shiretoko World Natural Heritage (SWH), Japan, as a case study of adaptive marine ecosystem management and co-management of coastal fisheries. He planned to verify what species and factors are monitored, how these data are evaluated, and how the benchmarks specified by the ecosystem management are sought. Matsuda’s work and research have contributed substantial new strategies and knowledge to address a range of issues, including contributions to the Marine Management Plan for the SWH as a case study of adaptive marine ecosystem management and co-management of coastal fisheries. He verified appropriate monitoring of species and factors, data evaluation, and ecosystem management benchmarks; he defined and developed the role and effect of co-management on ecosystem management; and he established an adaptive ecosystem management system in collaboration with UNESCO and the Japanese government for the SWH. Matsuda joined a climate change research group focused on Integrated Implementation of Mitigation and Adaptation for Climate Change in 2014. In November 2014, he organized an international workshop on the role of blue carbon for climate change mitigation and adaptation at which he promoted integrated ocean management from fisheries and ecological viewpoints.
