Pew’s project to End Overfishing in North-Western Europe focused on the implementation of two crucial elements of the European Union’s reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP): Setting fishing limits that will end overfishing by 2015 where possible or by 2020 at the latest, and putting in place multi-annual plans for the management of EU fisheries to realise these objectives.
In the past, ministers responsible for fisheries have often set fishing limits or Total Allowable Catches (TACs) over and above the scientific advice in the interests of short-term economic gains.
