New Pitcairn Marine Reserve Enforced by Satellite Technology

The United Kingdom announced the designation of Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve in the South Pacific Ocean on September 15, 2016. The Pitcairn reserve is now the world’s second largest marine protected area—measuring approximately 320,465 square miles (830,000 square kilometers).

The designation of Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve follows the successful demonstration of Project Eyes on the Seas satellite monitoring technology. It is the first time any government has combined the creation of a remote, fully protected marine area with a comprehensive plan to use the most up-to-date available technology to enforce prohibitions on fishing and other activities.
