The Global Ocean Commission was an independent initiative made up of 17 leaders from around the world who deliberated and consulted with experts for 18 months to form their recommendations to restore ocean health. It was co-chaired by José María Figueres, former president of Costa Rica; Trevor Manuel, former minister in the presidency of South Africa; and David Miliband, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee and former British foreign secretary. The commission released its proposals for action in June 2014.
Pew supported the work of the Global Ocean Commission along with several partners, including the Adessium Foundation, and Oceans 5. The commission was hosted at Somerville College at the University of Oxford.
