Leah Baumwell
PROFILE
Leah Baumwell leads Pew’s marine conservation work in Atlantic Canada, where she works with partners to protect the region’s rich and sensitive marine habitats and ensure the health of ocean ecosystems. Her work focuses on reducing the entanglement of endangered whales, protecting fish populations, supporting sustainable fishing practices, and advocating for ecosystem-based fisheries management.
Before joining Pew, Baumwell was a marine scientist for the International Game Fish Association, where she managed the world’s largest billfish satellite-tagging program. She was also a fisheries researcher for the University of Victoria and for the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Baumwell holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and studied coastal and marine systems at Coastal Carolina University. She is based in Boston.
