Foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria infect millions of Americans each year, causing lasting health problems for many. The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention estimates that of the 48 million people stricken annually by foodborne illnesses, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die.
