A multinational meeting failed to designate vitally needed marine reserves in Antarctica's Ross Sea. http://www.pewenvironment.org/campaigns/southern-ocean-sanctuaries-campaign/id/85899420400. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Andrea Kavanagh with The Pew Charitable Trusts discuss the importance of these dazzling seas, among the last pristine marine areas in the world and our healthiest penguin habitat.

This meeting of 24 countries and the European Union was a third attempt by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, or CCAMLF, to protect large areas in the Southern Ocean. The proposals will be reconsidered at CCAMLR's 2014 annual meeting next October.
